The stories I have included and will include here are both original short stories of my own and my re-tellings of traditional stories. Many of the stories will be ones which I have told many times during my storytelling tours in schools, theatres, cafes and streets.
I have worked as a storyteller and storymaker with approximately 50,000 people in about 20 countries in the last 19 years.
I now want to spend a bit of time writing down the stories I have been telling and offering them to other people to use if they would like to do so. In many cases I will be writing down the stories for the first time…I may have told them a hundred times.
The key effect of all this experience in oral storytelling is that my story texts are very much transcriptions of an orally delivered text. This is a very different medium to the written story. I hope you will not mind my asserting that this oral story transcription of the stories makes them a very genuine alternative to the normal written medium versions of the story.
Perhaps I should write an article about the difference between the language used in an oral telling and in a written telling…just in case you are interested…in fact…please tell me if you would like me to do this.
Of course the written form of the story is not the same medium as the spoken form but I will do my best to retain the words even if I cannot include the range of meanings contributed by the voice and by the body.
I may make some suggestions about which stories go down well with particular ages of students and also may add some ideas for activities. However, my main aim is to share with you my stories and leave it to you to decide whether you want to use them and with whom.
