The disco and the jacket

These three kids went to a disco, two boys and a girl: Steve, Bob and Nancy. Steve, was eighteen and borrowed his dad’s car. They stopped at a traffic lights and saw a girl. Bob opened the window and said, “Hey! You want to come to a disco with us?” She smiled and got in the car. She said her name was Jean but she didn’t speak very much.

She and Bob got on really well. Bob told Steve and Nancy, “She’s great. She’s a wonderful dancer. But it’s strange, her hands are very cold and so is her face.”

After the disco Jean said, she was cold so Bob gave her his jacket. They took her to her home in the car then they drove away.

About five minutes later Bob said, “Hey, Jean’s got my jacket!

Then Steve said, “You’re lucky! You can go and see her tomorrow and ask for it back!”

The next day all three of them went to Jean’s house and rang the door bell. A woman came to the door and asked them what they wanted. They said, “Is Jean in, please?” The woman said, “There’s nobody called Jean in this house.” She looked very strange. So they said, “But we took her to this house last night.”

Then the woman said, “My daughter was called Jean but she died, five years ago.”

They said, “But we went to the disco with her. She’s alive. We danced with her and talked to her.”

The woman said, “Come inside the house, for a moment.” She took them into the sitting room. “Look here’s her photo.”

“That’s her!” they said.

“But Jean died five years ago. We buried her. Come down to the cemetary and I will show you her grave.”

They went down to the cemetary with the mother and there was Bob’s jacket hanging on the gravestone.
