Hello! You are very, very welcome!

This site is a library of stories and articles which I would like people to use if they find them of interest.

By offering what I have made I hope to put a grain of sand in the balance set against all the selfishness and greed, violence and prejudice in this world of ours.

Modern technology is bringing down dictatorships…lets use it to build up companionship as well!

So you can now go directly to what interests you most.  You will find the contents of the site on your right…so just click on stories or articles or whatever you want.

News information

In these last few years I have continued to have had the good fortune to be invited to lovely places and to work with great people…lovely too!

One of my greatest working visits was to Japan to give a talk at the International Storytelling Conference in Kobe, Japan and to tell stories in local schools…

And then my contribution to Jaya’s conferences in Malaysia and so many visits to Turkey!  I love to be invited to Turkey…it is just ‘down the road’ from Hungary and it is such an interesting country…great hospitality and great food!

Autumn 2014 a very special visit to Preveza in North Western Greec, to contribute to the TESOL conference.  What a place for a storyman!  Ithaka is next door and the entrance to the underworld where Odysseus went to meet Tiersias the blind Theban seer is just to the north of Preveza.

My book of short stories, ‘Beggar in Bogota’, is now published.  Please write to me if you would like to buy a copy.  I will sign a copy and put a picture in it if you ask me to.  The cost is 10 pounds plus postage.  andrew@ili.hu

My chief aim now is to get on with preparing for my sessions TESOL Macedonia Thrace in 2015…I want to develop my ideas for helping teachers to tell their own stories as part of their English teaching.

My other work is to get on with my next book of stories of my own on eccentrics.

Snippets of ideas about stories and storytelling

What is a story?

A story narrates a past event or series of events and normally includes: emotions, desires, frustrations, struggles and some kind of conclusion.

Stories are normally told through words or words and pictures.

Stories may be based on real events or on imagination.

Stories are also manifested on the stage of our everyday lives: the way people respond to experience through their actions and through their buildings,

books and battlefields.  Everyday life is a living story.  The BBC news often says, ‘The top stories today are…’

The craft of telling stories

Andrew Wright

Telling: everybody tell stories

Everybody tells other people about what has happened to them.  That is the most common sort of storytelling.  And some people tell stories which are about other people or are from imagination.  They are all stories.  Can you improve your storytelling?  Everybody can.

Telling: be you!

You cannot be somebody else when you are a teller. You must be you!  Be you but more so!  Put your heart and your care into your telling, in your way.  And do your best to share this with your listeners.  Tell it so they can hear you and understand you and can share your feelings.

Telling: commitment!

No half measures!  Throw yourself into it and do your best…you cannot do more…but you must do that.

Telling: all the gears

It would be strange if you only used first gear in your car when you have four or even six to use!  But that is what so many people do when they tell stories…they speak, almost in a monotone and at a monopitch and monovolume and monotenor.  And, so often, tellers scarcely use their body to clarify and to heighten meaning.

Use the full range of your voice and body!.  But, in your way, not as a copy of someone else.

Telling: heightening

Be yourself but more so.  If, in order to heighten meaning and feeling,  you emphasise the qualities of your voice, if you emphasise speed or slowness, softness or harshness, if you lengthen your gesture or double the time spent on raising your eyebrows and so on, then your listeners will feel there is something special going on.

Telling: pause

Pauses between ideas are electric!  And take your time!  Don’t be hurried!

Telling: story readiness

Everybody, without exception, wants to listen to stories BUT nobody wants to listen all the time.  If someone is pre-occupied with other concerns then, of course, they may not listen to you, however good a story teller you are.  Sometimes the situation of your telling makes them ready…they may have come specially to your story telling session.  But often stories are told at meal times or during parties or in the pub and then you have to choose your moment…you might even begin by saying, Can I tell you a story?  Something to help them to click over to story listening mode.

But don’t take it personally if people don’t settle down to listen…your best hope is to remain calm and patient.

Telling: forgetting a bit of the story

The main thing is to remember the key steps in the story…not the details.  If you make a mistake over a detail don’t show or tell the listeners!  Carry on and, if necessary, integrate the mistake into the story as if it should be there.

Telling: interruptions

Inevitably there are going to be interruptions, usually not deliberate: somebody arrives late right in the middle of a key part of your story;  somebody drops a book or there is a loud noise outside.

Either carry on exactly as you were doing or pause, calmly, showing no irritation…or even greet the person…show them a place to sit…even tell them a resume of the story so far but above all remain the storyteller and don’t switch to being an irritated ordinary person…that is what would really break the spell.

I earn my living by: writing books, illustrating books, telling stories and helping other people to make and tell stories, and working with language teachers who would like to use stories in their teaching.  I live in Hungary with my wife Julia and our two children Alexandra and Timea and our three dogs.  In Hungary I do my writing and illustrating and in other countries I do my storytelling and my work with teachers.

I have been writing books, articles and stories for many years. My books are published by: Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Longman Pearson and Helbling Languages. I have published twelve books for children, six with OUP and the others are now out of print and I have written stories for West German Television, BBC and Thames Television.

The articles…

I have so many articles and sets of workshop notes just sitting in my computer that it occurred to me that I could make them available to interested colleagues. Dennis Newson suggested how it could be done and I am very grateful for the time he has spent setting up this wordpress site.

Practicality

The articles are virtually all very practical. I most firmly believe that there must be a strong rationale underlying every practical idea. Indeed, practical ideas are manifestations of underlying principles.

Using and reproducing the articles

The articles are on this wordpress site for you to use if you would like to do so. If you want to reproduce the articles or quotations from the articles for your students then all you have to do is to include my name, the name of the article and my wordpress address. If you want to reproduce the articles or quotations from the articles for publications, for example, newsletters for teachers, books or the internet then please write to me, tell me about it and I am almost certainly going to agree. Just taking my work and reproducing it without acknowledgement is unjust, is plagiarism and proably breaks the copyright law.

My reason for offering my work is to contribute to the body of positive acts in this world society of ours which is so full of distress and misery brought about by greedy grabbing or intolerant arrogance.

My indebtedness to others

I have learned and am learning so much from other people. However, the overall character of each of my articles is mine, I believe. On the other hand, I am so conscious of my gratitude to so many people who have helped me to see things more clearly. I have not consciously taken a clear idea from someone else in the form in which they made it available to others without acknowledging that I have done so. If you spot an idea…and combinations of words used to express the idea which are the same as those of another author then please let me know…I will certainly look into it.

Stories

I have worked as a professional storyteller for fifteen years. The stories reproduced here are ones I have written. Some of the stories are original and others are my version of traditional stories.  Once more…write to me if you would like to reproduce them. I am almost certain to agree.

Teacher training

I have loved working with teachers in about 35 countries in the last 35 years and I hope I will be able to continue for many years to come.

Pictures and drawings

I have illustrated most of my own books and I still do some painting and drawing.   Examples of my pictures for books, for television and for language teaching as well as some of my paintings and drawings are now, ‘on show’. If you would like to see them scroll down the list of blue titles on the right hand side of your screen until you come to the different categories of types of picture at the bottom of the list.  Click on what you would like to see.  If you want to make the pictures bigger, click and then click again when the picture is enlarged.

(I would like to thank Dennis Newson for his help in starting this blog and for continuing to support me in every way that he can. Dennis, in turn, would like to thank Barbara (’Bee’) Dieu for all her assistance and encouragement.  Most importantly, in recent weeks I want to thank my colleague Tibor who has put all the pictures on the site.  I am so grateful to him and so full of admiration for his knowledge and for the way his brain works!)

This site is mainly for lovers of stories and storytelling and particularly, though not exclusively, for storytelling in schools.

I have followed the pains and sweat of setting up this blog (through Dennis). I must commend you – it looks very informative. Looking at the number of hits so far on your infant, it’s clear to see that it will be a popular one and I am already looking forward to learning more here!

    Andrew,
Looking at the picture of you up top, I must say I sympathise with your perdicament. Some teacher has left the blackboard a mess! And those pictures propped up on the chalkledge! Who would ever do such a thing? They would block the lower forms of declaimed verbs!! Finally, and most atrociously, the students desks are mayhem–chaos incarnate! The previous teacher not only was unable to discipline himself (as evidenced by the blackboard), he let the students run riot at their desks! Toys instead of texts? I rest my case.

Still, you soldier on. At the front of the class, you appear to hold a piece of paper. A worksheet, no doubt. Perhaps one of those excellent lists of irregular verbs for students to copy. Passive Periphrastic and Ablative Absolute forever!
    😉

The WordPress gremlin was put to sleep, on the “Stories” pillow 🙂
Remember when you add pages (static) they will appear on the main navigation of the site (main page category), unless you submit them under the wing of a parent page (main tabs).

Now…your Stop Press story, could have been submitted as a post (blog), but then your splash page below would have to be put on the navigation bar under the category ABOUT. Do you want me to try?
    Warm regards from Brazil,

  8. 8 Berta January 18, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Hi Dennis, I had read in LwC your search for a web space that could accomodate your friend Andrew´s needs and I am glad you found it. It seems very helpful to have the static pages on the top tabs and blog entries in the main page. Both can take comments and even pictures and other files, so they offer a lot of potential.

Since I am very visual and get attracted by colors, I would place a picture on top of the posts, or near the top on either side among the sentences. I creates a nice effect as one opens the page for the fisrt time. Too many words are sometimes scary, but placed with an image that represents them makes a difference.

The side bar seems a little bare. Some links to external sites or a flickr are would be nice, don´t you think?

Congratulations on so much work and I am glad you seem to have landed at the right place. ((((((hugs)))))) Berta

Loved the toys and titbits on the tables in the photo..what a great way to stimulate storytelling. The titles of your workshops look a hoot. Andrew, have you thought about doing them online in a virtual session room – we could enjoy them all the way here in Australia!

    Susan,

This is Andrew’s blog, but I believe it is in order to answer as a reader. The concern about webpage v. blog (or wiki) was simply that somethings are done more easily on blogs than on websites whereas somethings are easily done on websites, but not on blogs. I think a questiion for anyone setting up a site today is – should it be a blog, webpage or wiki – and which one?

Coming back to this blog after a long absence, I see it has developed even further!
Dennis, you comlain about transfering word to notepad and then posting it. Have you tried putting the texts onto Flock?
    http://www.flock.com/start/
I don’t know how Flock treats word documents, but once it’s on Flock, you should be able to get onto wordpress with perfect precision
    Good luck!

    Illya,

Nice to see you here again. I tried Flock but got a bit lost between it and Burner. Thanks very much for the tip, though. I shall try again. What interests me is to see if it is possible to get a bit more control over format and type. Andrew’s content deserves it.

    Dear All of You!
Thank you for your various comments…all so helpful! There are almost no comments on the various articles and stories which we have put on the site. It would be lovely to hear…
Which articles an stories do you find particularly useful?
What sort of articles and stories would you like more of?
    Any suggestions about the content?
(Point taken about including more pictures)
    Love to you all

Hi Andrew! I met you in Florence on a course for English teachers and I can’t forget the magic of the meeting, the storyteller’s mantel and all the useful tips you gave us. When will you come back to Florence again? Soon, please, before I get too old!!!
Thank you for this blog, it is a real present for me! I will soon reply your post about the content.
    Take care.

  16. 16 illyasoet February 28, 2007 at 10:16 am

On posting again, (see Flock) – if you use Firefox (which I can heartily recommend) they have an add-on called Performancing. It’s just a little sign at the bottom of Firefox, but when you open it, you can write and post directly to the blog. I have found this easier than Flock. It opens under whatever site you opened it and you can adjust the size of the window so you can directly refer to other content.
You can use html and post to different blogs. Let me know what you think

    Dear Andrew,

I came across your page via the Storytell Listserve via Richard Martin via the Asian Conference page headed by Sheila Wee (sp?).

Your stories and articles are enjoyable, educational, and thought provoking. I especially love the paragraph or two after the stories. It gives me added insight to the story itself. I’ll be returning to read more in the days to come.

    I came across this quote
“A favourite analogy for me: Our bodies are made of the food we eat and our minds are made of the stories we hear.”

Is that your analogy? I’d like permission to use it on my website but I want to give the source. I’ll put your name and a link to your site, if you give me permission to use it.

    Till our story paths cross…Marilyn

  28. 33 Friederike November 9, 2010 at 4:20 pm

    Dear Andrew

I think you are (w)right that our lives are written into stories, and the great thing is that we keep re-writing them and they get told back to us with different episodes added on or left out. And what a good thing it is, too, that we don’t know their endings.
When my students look back at their teachers they do remember the stories more than the grammar lessons. But finding the memorable stories and getting to be a good story teller needs just as must hard work as learning other things.

Thanks for all your ideas. You’ve inspired many more, I’m sure.
    All the best
    Friederike

One of your many interests is in the history of language teaching, isnt it? So what you say about the way history is made relates to that interest as well as to personal stories about teaching and learning? Andrew

In the last few months I have used my site more as an on-going chat room…my plan is to add at least twenty more articles and twenty more stories but I am deep in wriing articles and chapters at the moment and hten I have a huge illustration job to do for Nepal which is important to me…but I WILL with your encouragement keep on adding to the site. Thank you for your poke.

  38. 53 Kirill May 30, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Hello to you dear storytellers of a faraway land!

I am Kirill P. Gopius, a big fan of storytelling as well as the head of the Center of Applied Knowledge «Prime Life Education» in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

I found your resource on the internet and, like a lonely sailor, shipwrecked and stuck on an uninhabited island, I am sending you a message in a bottle. I hope that you at least will read it and, if fortune smiles upon me, swim out and save me from my solitude.

Russia is a very unique, isolated country; it merely observes the important business and cultural processes, that take place in the civilized world. However, there is a positive side to this. For example, this gives us the opportunity to analyze the experience of others and to avoid their mistakes.

This is certainly true when we speak about the situation with the market of storytelling in Russia. While in the western world storytelling is a big industry, in Russia only few have ever heard of it and even fewer realize how it can be used in the modern world.

I am convinced that the development of the Digital Storytelling industry shows the degree of civilization of society. In the 21th century Digital Storytelling is plays a key role in plenty of opportunities just as cinema does in this precious century. Strange as it may seem, the storyteller, standing alone in the space of a digital file can have a more profound influence on the audience than famous train of the Lumiere brothers or expensive Avatar.

I am writing a long letter because I have plenty of time being on an uninhabited island without any company.

So, dear friends, storytellers, over 6 years I have been working in the field of storytelling and my aim is to tell people about storytelling and to teach them how to use it. For that reason I have founded the Center of Applied Knowledge «Prime Life Education». I have spent 6 years trying to involve the youth in St.-Petersburg and Moscow in the testing of an experimental educational model.
Young people have certain skills and abilities; they can make photos and video clips, create stories, chat with friends, surf the Web and social networks, travel and participate in all kinds of cultural and entertainment events, etc. In «Prime Life Education» they learn how to use this wealth of knowledge to earn money, raise their social status and contribute to the overall prosperity of society. The concept of the Center is “applied knowledge“. And of course it is impossible without storytelling as well as without another important component of modern marketing – event management (courses of which are also available in the Center).

I hope that the Storytelling Festival, the first in Russia, is going to demonstrate the potential of creating and telling digital and oral stories and how this potential can be used in the development of Russian society. According to my plan this is also going to be the stage for storytellers of our Center as well as invited performers and authors.

It is my heart’s desire to give people information about storytelling and the chance to meet people who have been participating in the practice for many years. I mean you. I want people to experience the unforgettable impressions of listening to your stories, as told by your storytellers.

Could you please let me know on which terms you would be willing to participate in our festival? I would be also very pleased if you shared with me the experience of running such an event. In the end, just your support is a thing of great importance for me…

I am standing on the shore, waiting for an answer and encouragement. I can feel the silence on my island, but I believe, that soon the voices of thousands of storytellers will break it, perhaps thanks to you.

And like John the Baptist I tell you – storytelling will come! And people’s hearts will open to the good, and they will look without disbelief at those who stand near them, and they will see the God in each of them.

    Best regards,
    Storyteller Kirill P. Gopius

I would suggest trying to get away from the yogurt with added sugar though. Now I eat plain greek yogurt with some added berries. While I was transitioning from sugared yogurt I added a small amount of jam, and gradually decreased the jam until I didnt need it any more. When fresh berries are out of season (or just too expensive) I use frozen ones thawed in the fridge overnight.

This man hacks my email and facebook accounts daily hacked my website and is generally made my life hell any time i touch a computer for the last seven years. his latest prank was to use someones account that I was romantically interested in and interfere in our relationship eh even went as far as to get someone to pretend to be him on the phone and try to tell me horrible things.

  65. 107 primarkonlineshoppings November 11, 2011 at 8:14 am

My own take on privacy is that at least with Facebook, Twitter, etc. I CHOOSE to put data up there, and am careful in selecting what I do commit to tehse people. After 20 years online in one form or another (I go back to the days of dialup BBS and FIDONETs) I work on the principle that everything I commit online may come back and bite my bottom anyway.

I am more concerned about the invasion of privacy conducted by Google with its Street View, its keeping of search records to build its database of intentions, etc.

And ultimately Hell, Im MUCH more worried (living in the UK) about the authoritarian laws of personal liberties that my Government is still introducing.

  66. 108 ps3bundlenews November 11, 2011 at 8:21 am

As I understand it you have full capacity to delete information and their rights to your information ends with the deletion (not to be confused with deactivation) of your account, except for that data which has already been distributed. Also they note that it may persist in backup for a reasonable length of time, which I can only assume is until the backup is phased out.

The parts about facebook applications seems more troubling to me than facebooks stake in the matter.

The problem is when they have castrated, cut-off, and self-mutilated genitalia on their brains and think they are doing people a favor when they try and put this self-projecting morbidity on theirs!

Im sure Im not the only one to happily refuse to let every healthy, natural, genital impulse be associated and over-coded in advance with pallid, sickly ideations of incest & castration.

Much better orgasms that way! And dating becomes both a self-affirmation and an affirmation of earthly, somatic, natural-biological life!

Lacan in Seminar XVII broadens the concept of castration that much, that a change of terminology is more than just a little justified

I gained more muscle in the off-season,
lost more fat in the contest season (as low as 3.4%) and stayed leaner all year round,
maintaining a 7-9% body fat percentage without much difficulty. I also moved up a full
weight class. My energy was better. I was leaner. I was stronger.
My small adjustment to 50-30-20 might have worked well for me simply because
I have an endo mesomorph body type and Im a bit carbohydrate sensitive, but it also
worked for the vast majority of my 600+ personal coaching protgs.
    – Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle p. 163

Everything else is solid, but this Carb curve is not telling the whole story, in terms of weight maintenance.

    Hello Andrew,
I wanted to use the story of Little Red Riding Hood to 11 year old students! do you think that the content is too “babyish” for them? I’ve already read your lesson plan in your book-Storytelling with children-which is really interesting but I’m not sure because of their age..
    Kind regards,
    Anastasia Pouliou, Greece

    • 120 Andrew Wright February 28, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Anastasia, you are right to be sensitive about children from 10/11 upwards…they can be sensitve about such things…but you know your class. One possibility is to do lots of activities with it and that would occupy their creativity…for example…you begin the story and then they have to close their eyes adn try to see what she looks like and tell their neighbour…same with the wood etc…seeing it in detail… Of course another idea is to re-tell it and make it as silly as possible…eg she goes to grandma on her scooter with a pizza…and so on… For me it is such a tough story that no silly activity can hurt it…and a lot of great tales would be destroyed by such treatment. Good luck with it. Andrew Please come to my workshop in August! Here is the ad attached!

IBy the way, the story ‘on the way home’ by Jill Murphy where Little Red Riding Hood makes her appearance, is also considered a good choice or not? I’m a bit confused about the quality of the story that I will select….Yes, I will try to come to your workshop..
once again thank you very much for answering me,
        Anastasia

I have just read you 2008 HLT article on enriching language teaching with designer skills.
1.Why have I been wayward and lazy in this area as a teacher?
Bonnie Tsai used to berate me for the bareness of my training room walls.
( Sure I told her that that bareness was to facilitate inside picture making by my trainees……..but then I should have been a lawyer!)

What you say about new young people already being fully in this visual world is incontrovertible.

The suggestions that lang people work with, thru and alongside
visualising teachers is basic commonsense and strengthens any school.

    Lovingly yours,

Old Codger Mario from the Faversham Marshes.
